What to wear horseback riding in Las Vegas

The ranch rules are short: closed-toe shoes and long pants. The desert adds the rest: sun on the way out, cold after dark.

You do not need riding gear for any of the rides on this site. Helmets are provided where required, and the horses are walked, not galloped.

Here is what to wear and pack, based on the operators' rules and what guests say they wished they had brought.

The quick answer

Wear closed-toe shoes (required) and long pants (recommended). Add sunglasses, a hat that will not blow off, and sunscreen. Take a warm layer for the campfire and the ride back, especially from November to March, plus water and some cash for tips.

Closed shoes are the one non-negotiable.

What shoes should you wear?

Closed-toe shoes are required on the Wild West rides; boots or sturdy sneakers with a low heel are ideal.

Sandals and flip-flops are not allowed. A small heel helps your foot stay in the stirrup; the listing's own tip is to keep your heels pointed down while riding.

Should you wear shorts or long pants?

Long pants. The listing recommends them, and they protect your legs from rubbing against the saddle.

Jeans or soft trousers both work. Avoid very slippery fabrics, which make it harder to sit securely.

What about the sun?

Bring sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat that stays on, because the sunset ride heads out while the sun is still strong.

One guest's advice: dress for the weather and the desert, with hats, sunblock, sunglasses or long sleeves. A cap or a hat with a chin strap is easier than a loose cowboy hat.

Will you be cold after dark?

Quite possibly, from late autumn to early spring: the desert cools fast after sunset, and you eat and sit by the campfire outdoors.

Bring a fleece or jacket you can tie on or leave in the minibus. A morning-ride guest warned that December mornings at the ranch are chilly: it is not the Strip.

After dinner you sit outside by the fire, weather permitting.

Do you need to bring water?

Yes, bring some: the Wild West listing does not list drinks, while the Red Rock sunset ride includes soft drinks and bottled water.

One reviewer advised bringing extra water and snacks. In summer, drink before you ride.

What should you leave at the hotel?

Anything you would hate to drop: big bags, loose jewelry and anything that dangles.

Keep your phone in a zipped pocket or a cross-body strap. Guests often mention the wranglers offering to take photos, so you do not need to juggle a camera on horseback.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a riding helmet?

Helmets are provided. On the Wild West rides they are required for riders 12 and under and available to everyone; at Red Rock, riders under 18 wear them.
